The colloquial term penny comes from the Britishcoin of the same name. The current US centcoin with profile of President Abraham Lincoln has been made since 1909 to celebrate the centennial of his birth. The reverse of these first Lincoln cents featured two wheatheads in memorial style. After 50 years,in 1959, the reverse design was changed to the Lincoln Memorial design. In 2009, to celebrate the Bicentennial ofLincoln’s birth, the US Mint made four different reverse designs. They included the birth and early childhood design, the formative years design, the professional life design, and the presidency design.
